Chanda approached the exit to the building on hands and knees and was gratified when the seam opened for her without any fuss. Galt was standing at the exit and helped her onto her feet. Irene and Akira were right next to him. "We were getting pretty worried about you," Galt said. "We kept trying to get through to you â nothing!"
"Govanek and I . . . well, we found out what goes on in this building." She recounted what she and Govanek had witnessed inside.
"Oh, my God," Irene said, and the concern in her voice was such that Chanda looked more closely at her and wondered if she should be concerned about her â Irene's face looked as if all the blood had drained out of it and she was rubbing her gloved hands together as if coping with a deep worry. "How could you stand to witness that?"
"For them, it's a natural function," Chanda said. "Not very pleasing, to be sure. I don't really want to talk about it right now. Let's get back and see how our quarters are coming along."
She turned to Govanek, who still looked shaken, as much as Chanda could tell in a Sobrenian. Sedra and Tiernan hadn't moved from their position next to their vehicle, and didn't look as if they were going to. They don't seem very concerned about Govanek, Chanda thought. She told her, "You did a great job in there. Maybe you'll be an explorer yet."
Govanek said, "I believe today I've learned not all exploration is a joyful experience."
"You have a gift for understatement." She indicated Sedra and Tiernan. "I guess you'd better get back to your friends."
Govanek started to say something, then paused, seeming to think better of it. Then she told Chanda, "Thank you for accompanying me." Govanek headed toward the vehicle that had brought her and Sedra and Tiernan and the Garotethan to this place.
She wanted to say something else, Chanda thought. But knew her friends . . . or maybe I should say colleagues . . . would hear her over the datalink.
"Let's get the hell out of here," she told her own colleagues, and headed toward the other Buruden vehicle.
